Independence from... My 65

After 65 years, we still look forward or sincerely wish to gain independence from at least these 65 things, not in any specific order and some might seem repeated, but what the hell:
  1. Ageing politicians (thank God they didn't understand IT industry)
  2. Servile mindset (Still Ghulam)
  3. "Gora" is superior (Colonial hangover)
  4. Cows & dogs on the road / dirty congested dilapidated Roads
  5. Untrained drivers
  6. Encroachment
  7. "Chalta Hai" attitude
  8. Female foeticide
  9. Strikes
  10. Cricket as the only sport
  11. Corruption (that was easy)
  12. Fear of entering a police station (dichotomy)
  13. Crime against women & children
  14. Child labor
  15. Babu creating education system (Where are the enterpreneurs?)
  16. Khans in Bollywood (All touching 50s)
  17. Public urination / defecation (Never a good sight)
  18. Government run companies (esp Railways, Airlines)
  19. Total lack of mobile phone manners
  20. Inadequate places for orphans, invalids, elderly
  21. Insufficient power supply / Power thefts
  22. Slums
  23. Dislike to cleanliness / Affinity to filth
  24. Horn Please / OK TATA / Buri Nazar wale tera mooh kala (Ab to change karo)
  25. News channels (Dekhiye Aaj ka khulasa)
  26. Saas Bahu serials
  27. Page 3 (Who are these people?)
  28. Scams
  29. Riots
  30. Khap killings
  31. Money minded Doctors
  32. Snail paced judicial system
  33. Non-operational traffic lights
  34. Absence of educated voters
  35. Farmer suicides
  36. Pakistan (Come on guys, it has been 65 years)
  37. Tuitions / Coaching classes (Who is studying in schools?)
  38. China made goods
  39. Slow internet (Will it ever be fast enough?)
  40. Fear (of anything)
  41. Snake-charmer typecast (These days snake charmers earn only from Hollywood)
  42. Taj Mahal as the only tourist attraction
  43. "Garibi Hatao" slogan
  44. Inflation
  45. Tax evaders / Black Money
  46. Spiritual Babas
  47. Dry days (Think Gujarat)
  48. Procrastination
  49. Umbilical cord (figurative)
  50. Common Cold (high time a cure is found)
  51. Spam
  52. Nosy neighbours
  53. Facebook Timeline (Yes, I seem to be getting obsessively repulsive)
  54. Stress
  55. Natural calamities
  56. Terrorism
  57. Routine
  58. Global warming (it is fashionable to mention this)
  59. What would others say?
  60. Age (can do whatever whenever)
  61. Eating (without bothering about weight gain)
  62. Lies (Can we ever be truthful?)
  63. Visas
  64. Unwanted hair (God's defect. Read my previous posting)
  65. Boredom
I am sure you agree / diagree with me on some / many of the above but that's exactly what is freedom all about. And Yes, you are free to add your own...

Yaar-Papa (Buddy Father)... How times change!

Yaar- Papa... That's how my son addresses me. He has been doing so for sometime but somehow I only noticed it a few days back. " Yaar " in Hindi is generally used for someone who is a bosom friend ( langotiya yaar  sounds better) and "Papa" should wield respect and a guarded distance. That truly sounds like an oxymoron, surely Yaar & Papa seem contradictory. Forget calling my Father  Yaar- Papa, I wouldn't dare even uttering the " Yaar " word in front of him as he considered it  sadak chhap (language of the ruffians), all of which was forbidden to be used. I would barely see my Father once a week, sometimes even once a month when he would go off on extended business tours. He had a large family to feed and five younger siblings to get married off while I was being brought up by my Aunts. There was absolutely no way of getting any closer to my Father. Are you a Sindhi? Most of you would ask this question to someone whose name ends with an ‘ani’. And if you get a response in the affirmative what exactly comes to your mind? In all likelihood, the oft repeated saying, “If you see a Sindhi and a snake, kill the Sindhi first”, would come to your mind. Now that I have mentioned it, let’s start with the surname only. Each surname actually identifies the family from where one originated. In all likelihood, my ancestor was called ‘Kaku’ and ‘Kakwani’ is how his family gets identified which would translate into 'belong to the family of Kaku'.
